How Does CEREC Same-Day Crown Technology Work?

Getting a dental crown used to mean two visits, a temporary crown, and a two-week wait for a lab to finish your permanent restoration. This was often a hassle for kids and adults with busy school and work schedules. Today, that entire process can happen in a single appointment with CEREC  same-day crowns.

At Brilliant Dental Care, we use CEREC same-day crown technology to design, mill, and place a custom ceramic crown while you wait, so you leave with a finished restoration instead of a temporary one. Dr. Kevin Freeman, who completed advanced postdoctoral training at the UTHealth School of Dentistry in Houston, has built his practice around this kind of chairside CAD/CAM dentistry that allows you to restore your smile efficiently and comfortably.

What Is CEREC Technology?

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. It combines computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) to create dental crowns directly in our office rather than sending an order to an outside lab.

Instead of a messy putty impression, we capture a precise digital scan of your tooth. That scan becomes the blueprint for a crown designed on-screen and milled from a solid block of ceramic, all within the same visit.

How Does the Same-Day Process Work?

The CEREC crown process replaces the traditional multi-step crown workflow with a single, continuous visit from start to finish. The stages of this treatment include the following:

Digital Scanning and Design

After preparing your tooth, we use a small handheld scanner to capture a detailed digital impression. This image appears immediately on our computer screen, where we design your crown to match the shape, size, and bite of your natural teeth.

Because the design happens digitally, we can make adjustments in real time. There is no need to redo a messy impression if something needs refining, which helps the process move efficiently from start to finish.

Milling and Placement

Once your crown is designed, the file is sent to an in-office milling unit that carves the restoration from a solid ceramic block. The milling process typically takes a matter of minutes rather than weeks.

We then check the fit, adjust the shade if needed, and bond the finished crown to your tooth before you leave. There is no temporary crown to manage and no second appointment to schedule.

What Are the Benefits of Same-Day Crowns?

Same-day crowns offer several practical advantages over the traditional two-visit process, especially for patients balancing busy schedules with dental care needs.

  • Fewer appointments: Your crown is designed, milled, and placed in one visit instead of two.
  • No temporary crown: You avoid the discomfort and risk of a temporary crown coming loose between visits.
  • Precise digital impressions: Digital scanning replaces traditional putty trays for a more comfortable experience.
  • Durable ceramic material: Milled ceramic crowns are strong and blend naturally with surrounding teeth.

A 2023 systematic review published in Cureus found that CAD/CAM crowns perform comparably to conventionally made crowns in terms of long-term clinical success, supporting same-day ceramic restorations as a reliable option for many patients.

Are You a Candidate for a Same-Day Crown?

Most patients who need a crown due to a large filling, a cracked tooth, or a root canal are good candidates for CEREC treatment. During your visit, we evaluate the tooth and surrounding structure to confirm that a same-day ceramic crown is the right fit for your situation.

We also pair this technology with other advanced tools in our office, including digital cone beam scanning and digital X-rays, so we have a complete picture of your oral health before recommending treatment. If a root canal is needed first, we also offer GentleWave technology to keep that process as comfortable as possible.
